A Message from the Board President and Executive Director
Christ Child Society, D.C. Chapter

Dear Members and Friends of the Christ Child Society of Washington D.C.,

"See a need and fill it…Nothing is ever too much to do for a child"

Never before have these inspirational words of our founder, Mary Virginia Merrick, been more important to us than they are today.  We at the DC Chapter of the Christ Child Society are working tirelessly to ensure that we continue to provide support and assistance to our children and families during these challenging and unprecedented times.  Earlier this week, we informed you that to ensure the health and safety of our members, staff and clients, we have suspended all volunteer activities and have moved to remote work for our staff.  Also, we posted an update on Wednesday that we have transitioned the Opportunity Shop to an online store to safely continue operations and generate sales.  Using technology such as google hangout, google voice, conference calls, emails, and texts, we are staying in touch with the students and teachers in our partner schools, the children in our Girls on the Rise program and their families, and our layette recipients.

As we come to the end of this first week of telework and remote services, we want to share some of the ways that our dedicated staff members are working to ensure that we are continuing to "see the need and fill it," as best we can, during these difficult times.

- Our Girls on the Rise social work team is holding daily virtual meetings, conducting daily phone and virtual check-ins with all of the girls and their families, and providing ongoing resource and crisis support.

- The school social workers are providing telephonic, virtual, and email support and crisis intervention to their clients and families; holding virtual staff meetings, book clubs, and lunch bunch sessions; and making referrals to organizations that are providing food and other material assistance for school-aged children.
- All social workers are focused on helping our clients cope with the isolation of distance learning and restricted activities as well as helping them process the endless stream of daily updates in the media.  In addition, they are available for crisis intervention to help families manage during this stressful time.
- The layette program distributed 800 layettes two weeks ago, at the start of the outbreak, and have provided additional layettes to individuals seeking assistance.
- We continue to accommodate the steady stream of requests for diapers and wipes.
- We have set up a system for safe delivery of supplies, through Amazon and Walmart, to the many families requesting help.

How can you help?

- Please pray for our children and families. Our mission to meet the material, educational, and emotional needs of children has never been more needed than it is now.
- Go to opshop.givesmart.com to browse and shop at the online Opportunity Shop.
- Purchase an Amazon or Walmart eGift Card. A $25 gift card provides a parent with a small package of diapers and wipes and $50 provides a 150+ count box of diapers. Please indicate rkramer@christchilddc.org as the recipient of the gift card. Thank you.

We remain eternally grateful to our members, volunteers, and friends who continue to support our work with their time, talent, treasure and prayers. We will update you periodically on the ways in which we continue to provide comfort and support to the children and families we serve during this stressful and unprecedented time.

Stay healthy,
Stephanie Farrell, Board President
Kathleen Curtin, Executive Director
